Kung Hei Fat Choy! Happy New Year!

During the first week of February, the Chinese New Year began. 1D joined in with the celebrations for a whole day. We watched videos showing how they celebrate and read the story of how each year is named after an animal. We found out that all the children in the class who are 6 in 2011 were born in the year of the Rooster and the chidlren who turned 6 in 2010 were born in the year of the Monkey!

We wrote our animal name using chinese symbols. We also made dragon masks, paper lanterns and rugs. It was a lot of fun!

At the end of the day we wore traditional Chinese clothing and took pictures of all the things we had made. As a special treat Miss Man gave us all a fortune cookie to take home.

What a busy day in class 1D!

1M in the computer suite

The children in 1M certainly look as if they are enjoying themselves in the computer room.

They have learnt a lot this school year during their sessions in the ICT suite. They have produced some beautiful artwork using the painting programs, developed their keyboard skills and used a range of programs to help them with numeracy and literacy. Of course, they are having such fun that they don't always realise they are learning all the time!

1D become the best of friends!

In 1D we have spent a lot of time getting to know one another. We chose our best friend and drew a picture of them. We had to look closely at the colour of their skin, their eyes and their hair. We posed for our friends while they drew us and then switched places.

Next we carefully painted our portraits using the correct colours. Then we took pictures with our friends and talked about why we like spending time with one another.

Everyone in 1D are getting on well.

1M make some class rules

The children in 1M thought about the rules we need to make our class a happy, learning environment. We decided that we need to listen carefully to one another and always do our best. We also want to be kind to one another, share toys fairly and always tell an adult when we are upset or hurt. So far, the rules are working and 1M is a great place to learn!

Year 1 have been busy with PE activities this half term. Look at us learning tennis and creating balances in gymnastics!!

Making masks

Year One have had lots of fun learning about recycling this year. The Redbridge Recycling Team spent a day in school showing us how to use recycled materials to make beautiful masks. Look at the finished results!

Welcome to year one!

Year One children have settled into their new classes - they have obviously grown up a lot during the summer holidays. This term we are learning all about ourselves and so far we have sung songs about the parts of our bodies and enjoyed lots of activities using the five senses. We are looking forward to seeing the animals from Wellgate Farm, going to St. Paul's Church for Harvest and a drama morning with an expert from the drama centre.

We're sure that the children agree that year one is great!
